Sherman always looked something of the mad man to me. His photo greatly resembling Van Gogh's haunted self-portrait, I always thought.
And methinks Sherman liked war a wee too much.
I have always wondered if Jeff Davis didn't make a huge blunder in replacing Johnston.
I suppose eventually the numerical superiority and the probable availability of more troops if needed would have eventually worn down Johnston's efforts anyway. But i'm no greatly military tactician and enjoyed your blow by blow account.
